Craft Show Thanks

Our annual Craft Show was a beautiful and successful event, thanks to the hundreds of people who volunteered countless hours of their time.  The weather was on our side this year, which brought many people out of their houses and into our magical space.  The unique “tie quilt,” created and donated to MUF by Roberta Bramhall, was displayed in the Great Hall.  The lucky winner of the quilt was E. Cowen of Morristown.  Todd Van Gordon's lovingly handmade boat graced the front of our building and sparked a lot of interest.

We'd like to thank Polly Nankivell for her round-the-clock work before, during and after the show.  We want to extend our gratitude to the Nemeths, Ken, Nina and Carly, who seemed to be everywhere during the show, but especially for cooking up all the chili.  Many thanks to Kara Solu, who helped kids create beautiful picture frames while their parents shopped.  Thanks to Homer, for decorating our place with his inventive and festive cutouts.

There are many people who headed up committees and we would like to thank them by name:

The Craft Show is a time when everyone from the Fellowship works together, from cleaning up the kitchen to hoisting heavy boxes from the basement, from guarding our crafts to running the computers.  It's a lot of work and it's even more fun.  People gather, share ideas, create, and enjoy the positive results. Volunteering has its interesting effects.  Last year John Oehler ran into a friend he hadn't seen in many, many years.  This year Betsy Burr developed her part of a Sunday program based on a conversation she had with Alyse Kalas who was working at the show.

To All Fellowship Members and Friends

I am writing to inform you that, after 39 years, our wonderful Craft Show is closing its doors.

There are several reasons.  We have been unable to rally the tremendous amount of help and support necessary for such a huge undertaking.  There is much more craft show competition in the area than in years past, so that our “take” even in very successful years has been declining.  And essentially all our Fellowship activities are closed down for an entire week during the busiest holiday season.   This news will be terribly disappointing to some of you and a huge relief to others.  But, it is time to look for a new approach.

Michelle Kunz has taken on the chair of a newly established Fundraising Committee that will work throughout the year to provide opportunities for both giving and community building.  She has some exciting ideas and will be looking for your input as well.

I can’t end this letter without celebrating the people who have spent so much time and energy on the Craft Show.  Astrid Martin and Rita Morris, who have been the backbones of the Show, of course, deserves massive amounts of thanks for the amazing job they have done.  And Alyse Kalas was their right hand.

The following Captains have our deepest appreciation:  John Oehler, Treasurer; Dan Byrd, Books; Anne Paust, Cashiers; Joan Clifford, Coat Room; Katharina Pietraszek and Judy Harris, Ken and Nina Nemeth, Al and Minda Chu, Crafts Café; Gloria Jackson and Susan Oxman, Crafts In and Out; Alyse Kalas, Crafts Take Down; Gail Solomon, Polly Nankivell, Julie and Bob Peterson, Roberta Bramhall, Display; Bill Forsyth, Facilities; Steve Gruber, Mail Back; Laurie McGeorge, Opening Night; George Aronson, Photography, Posters and Webmaster; Toby Tyler, Props Bring Up; Grace Sperber, Props Set-up; John Esposito, Props Take-Down; Alyse Kalas, Publicity; Judy Oehler, Sales; Don Price, Security; Catherine Corey and Marti Weinstein, Selection; Dick Stone and Dan Byrd, Signs; Helene Ferm, UNICEF; Marilyn Guernsey and Paul Mitchell, Welcome Table; Carol Todd, Wrappers and Gift Boxes; Vince Peszynski, Library Set-up.

And of course to the numerous other volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you.

So…more changes.  As we find new ways to help our Fellowship thrive, let’s keep in mind our purpose in community, our goals and values, and let’s have fun and enjoy each others’ company!

Elizabeth Bain

President
