Ready for a change of pace? How about some good old-fashioned Dixieland! This Pennsylvania ensemble includes Derf Nolde on piano and Bob Leive on cornet, along with outstanding performers on bass, drums, sax and trombone. Enjoy an evening of pure traditional jazz! By popular demand, the Keystone Jazz Group returns to the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship on May 21 at 8 p.m., to perform on our 24th annual Saturday Evening Concert Series. This outstanding ensemble of traditional jazz players includes Bob Leive on trumpet, Ken Foy on trombone, leader Derf Nolde on piano, Ernie Lumer on reeds, Joe Hanchrow on bass and tuba, and Fred Stoll on drums. They specialize in Dixieland, the jazz format born in New Orleans and carried north to Chicago on Mississippi River steamboats, with such trumpeters as King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. The concert will be held in the Fellowship’s early 20th-century mansion at 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township, and followed by a reception for the musicians. Tickets are $20, and may be reserved by calling 973-627-3282. Leive is the founder and leader of the Wooster Street Trolley, a well-known New York/ New Jersey jazz band. His beautiful trumpet, astonishing vocals, wit and unexpected philosophy captivate jazz fans throughout the country. Foy, a cofounder of the Wooster Street Trolley, has a Masters from Manhattan School of Music. The trombonist has performed at the Cape May Jazz Festival, Medford Jazz Jubilee in Oregon, Pee Wee Russell Stomp and many New York City jazz clubs, including The Red Blazer. Lumer is a Julliard graduate and has played with the Halifax Symphony. His jazz dossier includes performance on reeds with Max Kaminsky and appearances at Eddie Condon’s, Jimmy Ryan’s, The Cajun Club and Arthur’s. Nolde holds a Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and was on the faculty at Rutgers University. He is now a full-time jazz musician in the Philadelphia area. He has done concerts from Richmond to Chautauqua, and has played with Warren Vache Jr., Bucky Pizzarelli, Urbie Green and Kenny Daverne, among others. Hanchrow, a graduate of Michigan University, played with the Marine Band in Washington, D.C. He has been on the Tonight Show, appeared at Radio City Music Hall and played at most of the New York City jazz clubs. Stoll is one of the most sought-after East Coast traditional drummers, and has played with Milt Hinton and Max Kaminsky.
