Finding Your Place in the Movement: The Social Change Ecosystem

In a world that often feels like it’s pulling at the seams, many of us feel a deep, spiritual calling to help. Yet, that calling frequently comes with a side of "activist burnout." We think we have to be on every protest line, write every letter, and organize every meeting to make a difference.

According to author and advocate Deepa Iyer, the secret to sustainable progress isn't doing everything—it’s finding your specific role within a larger Social Change Ecosystem.

What is the Ecosystem Framework?

In her book, Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection, Iyer explains that social change movements are like biological ecosystems. They require a diverse array of "species"—or roles—to remain healthy and resilient. If everyone is a "Disrupter," there is no one to provide the "Caregiving." If everyone is a "Visionary," there is no one to do the "Building."

By identifying your natural strengths, you can contribute more effectively without losing yourself to exhaustion. The framework highlights 10 distinct roles, including:

  • Weavers: The connectors who see the lines between people, movements, and ideas.

  • Experimenters: The risk-takers who prototype new ways of living and working.

  • Frontline Responders: Those who step up immediately during a crisis to provide urgent care.

  • Storytellers: The creators who shift hearts and minds through narrative and art.

  • Healers: Those who tend to the individual and generational traumas that social injustice creates.

  • Guides: The mentors who teach, counsel, and transmit wisdom to others.

When we understand our role, we stop asking "What should I be doing?" and start asking "How can I best offer my unique gifts to the whole?"

Join Our 2025-26 Common Read

The Morristown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship invites you to explore these roles with us through our UUA Common Read. We believe this framework is a vital tool for our congregation to create the world we want to see.

Whether you are a seasoned organizer or just starting to look for your path, there is a place for you in these upcoming sessions:

  • Discussion for Adults & Older Youth: Deep reflection and group work.

    • Thursdays: March 19, March 26, and April 2 (5:30 – 7:00 PM)

  • Multigenerational Workshops: Active learning for all ages, including concepts from Iyer’s children's book, We Are the Builders!

    • Saturdays: April 11, April 18, and May 2 (10:00 AM – Noon)

  • Small Group Circles: Gather your own group at a time and venue that works for you during March or April.
