A port in the storm
If the lights go out at MUUF due to a power outage, even though we have solar on the roof, we have no way to access that solar to turn the lights back on. That would take another big investment to install batteries connected to the solar array. In the meantime, thanks to endowment funding, we have a smaller, portable battery now tucked into the northwest corner of the new kitchen, underneath the fire extinguisher. The refrigerator, phone, laptop, desk lamp - all can be plugged into this EcoFlow 2048 Watt-hour battery for temporary power in a storm. Should the power outage last longer, the 220 Watt portable solar panel can be connected, placed in the sun, to trickle charge the battery. Once the grid power returns, the battery can be plugged into an outlet to recharge.
The equipment is easy to use, with simple instructions located in the solar panel carrying case. Happy to provide a tutorial. The plug for the battery is on top of the battery. The cable to connect the solar panel to the battery is in the solar panel carrying case. While the battery, with its two handles, is readily moveable, we recommend using a cart if transporting it over a distance.
Why might you want to transport the battery? To help power a laptop at a fair or festival where MUUF was tabling is a great use of the solar panel and battery. Its presence helps promote that we are a solar powered organization!
One of the driving motivations for the equipment is to teach our young people about solar power. Originally planned to be used during MUUF summer camp, the Green Earth Ministry will take it to classrooms in May of 2027. In time, we want to build and race solar cars, complete with battery storage powered by the sun. The child in me is happy! The vision for the future is cleaner if we work to burn less.
