  • Volunteer with Faith Formation This Fall!

Do you believe in the power of curiosity, compassion, and community? Our children’s faith formation program is looking for caring adults to help guide the next generation of Unitarian Universalists—and we’d love to have you on the team. We’re currently recruiting for three key volunteer roles this fall: 🧒 Children’s RE Teachers – Lead or assist in Sunday morning classes 1–2 times a month. No teaching experience required—just a willingness to grow alongside our kids and support a warm, welcoming space. 👶 Nursery Volunteers – Help care for our littlest ones with a calm, playful, and nurturing presence. Serve 1–2 Sundays a month and offer parents the gift of peaceful worship. 🎨 Flex Planning Team – Work behind the scenes to coordinate our monthly “ Flex Sundays ,” where members of the Fellowship lead creative, one-time sessions for the kids. This is a great role if you enjoy organizing, connecting people, and supporting meaningful experiences. All roles come with training, support, and a built-in community of awesome volunteers. If you’ve ever thought, “I could do that,” —you probably can! Interested or curious? Reach out to Nick, Director of Religious Education to learn more or express interest. Thank you for helping our children grow in love, spirit, and community.

  • Report from 2025 UUA General Assembly

Report from General Assembly 2025 , held in Baltimore, Maryland, both in person and online.  Attending were 1882 credentialed delegates from 592 congregations in 48 states and 4 countries.  Delegates attended business meetings and voted on issues and elections.   (Recordings of the business meetings and Sunday Service are available on YouTube, search for UUA General Assembly 2025.) MUUF Congregational Delegates this year included Jeanne Craft, Shari Loe, Elias Ortega, Nan Perigo, and Judie Romano.  Shari and Elias were able to attend in person, while the rest of us attended online to the activities and the Business sessions of the UUA. The theme for this year was “ Meet the Moment ” – introduced at GA and meant to help guide the UUA for the coming years.  Meet the Moment  is a movement-wide framework helping Unitarian Universalists analyze, discern, and take values-based action in response to today’s religious, cultural, generational, and political realities.  Subscribe to Updates for more information and to join the movement. Several decisions were made by delegates, including the election of Officers and new GA co-Moderators ( Rev. Kimberly Quinn-Johnson and Bill Young were elected for a six-year term) (see UUA Elections ).  The candidates for Actions of Immediate Witness (AIW) and the Congregational Study/Action Issues (CSAI) were also discussed and decided upon. AIWs are statements about significant actions, events, or developments in the world that encourage immediate engagement action among UU member congregations and groups, it empowers local efforts and actions and helps our movement work together nationwide. The Actions of Immediate Witness (AIWs) affirmed this year include: Immigrants Are People Who Have Inherent Worth and Inalienable Rights Faithful Defiance of Authoritarianism, a Call to Action: Reaffirming Our Covenants for Democracy and Freedom! Defending LGBTIQ Freedom Amid Funding Crisis: A Call for Global Solidarity CSAIs are issues selected for three years of study, reflection and action; the purpose is to provide member congregations with an opportunity to address and engage in the study of a common issue – the end result being a deeper understanding of our religious position on the issue, expressed as a UUA Statement of Conscience. This year’s CSAI (Congregation Study/Action Issue) is Abolition, Tranformation and Faith Formation , which be the subject for congregations nationwide in the 3-year study, reflection, and action.  “Abolition is a holistic approach to systemic social change that includes, but is not limited to: the abolition of slavery; replacing systems and cultures of violence, coercion and control with transformative justice and relational practices; and dismantling the prison-industrial complex as we now know it. It requires the transformation of our society and the replacement of our current public theologies of retributive justice and violence.”  Contact SocialWiness@uua.org if you have questions regarding AIWs or CSAIs or how to get involved. We were treated to music from the new virtual UUA Hymnbook, Sing Out Love . There were many excellent speeches and reflections offered during the business meetings, including during reports, awards and installations.  My favorite includes a quote from Howard Thurman:  “ We are headed into dark times, and you need to be your own light.  Do not accept brutality or cruelty as normal, even if it is sanctioned.  Protect the vulnerable, and encourage the afraid.  If you are brave, stand up for others.  If you cannot be brave, and it is often hard to be brave, be kind. But most of all, never lose sight of who you are and what you value.” Next year’s GA will be virtual, held June 14-21 , with business meetings June 19-21, 2026.  GA2027 will be a multiplatform event hosted in San Jose, California June 23-27, 2027. Submitted by Nan Perigo, MUUF delegate to UUA-GA 2025

  • Goood Morning Baltimore! Stories from General Assembly 2025 (Teaser)

I was one of five Fellowship folks who attended General Assembly, but the only one who was able to go in person. President Nan’ report on the “business” we did at GA is in today’s Newsletter, so please check that out!  I’m working on a longer reflection for next week, but as a teaser – while there, I hung out with our beloved former Minister, Alison Miller, her husband, David Snedden and their son Asher.  Here’s Asher, with the lyrics to new versions of two favorite UU songs, rewritten by his middle school class at UU Portland, where his mom serves as Senior Minister.  Come back next week for more stories and photos!

  • Pride Evolution Through the Lens of Independence

July 7, 6 pm: Independence Day & Reflections on Pride.  Come join us as we reflect on July 4 th & its significance today.  We’ll also reflect on Pride 2025—its significance & how it has changed over the years. July 14, 6 pm: Viewing & Discussion: “The Celluloid Closet”.  Vito Russo’s book on the depiction of LGBTQ characters in Hollywood cinema is turned into a documentary on how queer lives were relegated to the shadows of the screen. It features celebrity interviews and an abundance of film clips. While “The Celluloid Closet” underscores the frustrations LGBTQ+ audiences have had with negative representations, it also ends with hope (later realized in subsequent films) for a more enlightened future. July 21, 6 pm: The Joys of July:  Come join is as we celebrate July and its fireworks, barbecues, and parades. We’ll also learn some fun facts about the month, such as the first person walking on the moon. Refreshments are served at each meeting, and attendees are asked for a small donation. July 28, 6 pm: The Florham Park Diner:  Enjoy good fun & food at a reasonable price!  We’ll meet at the restaurant located at 182 Ridgedale Ave in Florham Park .  Please rsvp by Friday, July 25,  to Gordon Sauer at president@gaamc.org .

  • Share What You Love on a Flex Sunday!

A special invitation to Fellowship groups and members Do you have a passion, talent, or spiritual practice you’d love to share with our kids? We’re inviting YOU—committees, affinity groups, musicians, artists, crafters, storytellers, and spirited individuals—to help lead a Flex Sunday this fall! What’s a Flex Sunday? Once a month, our children’s Religious Education program opens the door to new experiences by inviting members of the Fellowship to lead a one-time, hands-on class or activity for our kids. It’s a chance to connect across generations, share your gifts, and support our children’s spiritual growth in a fun and meaningful way. Some past and possible ideas: 🎨 Art projects 🌿 Nature walks or gardening 🎶 Music and rhythm games 📚 Storytelling or UU history 🍪 Simple baking or cooking 🧘🏽‍♀️ Yoga, mindfulness, or dance ❤️ Service projects or justice-based activities What do you need to do? Bring an idea—big or small—we’ll help you shape it! Plan for about 30–45 minutes of content for kids ages 4–11. We’ll provide a second adult volunteer and help with setup. Why it matters: Flex Sundays are a powerful way for our children to see that our whole community is here for them —not just their teachers. Your presence shows them what it means to live our UU values with creativity, compassion, and joy. If you’re curious or have an idea brewing, talk to Nick . We’d love to match you with a date this fall. Help nurture the next generation—just by being yourself.

  • Calling all who love our grounds

Are you enjoying the new landscaping around the Gateways Center?  It looks great now but summer heat will take its toll and help is needed with watering and weeding.  The Memorial Garden and most of the major plantings – the new trees – are now supported by sprinkler systems on automatic timers.  However, the small shrubs, grasses and plants that have been planted around the new addition, the new parking lot and in front of the courtyard will all need some TLC. Volunteers are needed to see that these young plantings get water and a little weeding for the first summer until they are established.  Several volunteers have already ‘adopted’ specific landscape areas, such as the beds at the entrance to the circular drive and the sidewalk from the main parking lot to the main entrance. This is an opportunity to pick a manageable sized area and make it one of  your summer projects.  It’s also a great way to give back to the Fellowship by keeping the grounds beautiful for us all.  This work is not physically demanding and, again, you can pick an area that matches your time availability and energy levels. If interested, please contact Steve Parker or Katy Julich . Please say “yes”.  Summer is upon us and record breaking heat is forecasted for next week. Thank you!
