Transylvania Tidbit – Going to Kolozsvár and Sinfalva

Next week Gabor will be heading to Kolozsvár, the main city in Transylvania, which is about 30% ethnic Hungarian, and the headquarters of the Unitarian Church in Romania and Hungary. He will be attending a weekend Youth Conference organized by ODFIE, the Hungarian Unitarian Youth Organization, as a representative of UUWYN, the UU World Youth Network. The website of the Youth Conference itself is here. It is written in Hungarian, but your browser should offer to translate it for you.
One of the events during the conference will be a visit to Mészkö, the “Alabaster Village” to celebrate the 125 anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Balázs, the minister described in that book. That village is very close to Sinfalva, so Gabor will be able to visit our Partner Church. He will be picking up the embroidered shirts which were sold at last year’s Service Auction, and also meeting with Mihály Bálint, the current interim minister there. He will emphasize our desire to maintain our relationship with the congregation in Sinfalva, and hopefully learn something about when a new permanent minister will be named.
As promised, a special treat, here is the Kolozsvar Unitarian High School Youth Choir, singing Woody Guthrie’s song “Deportee”, which will be used in an upcoming UUWYN event. The clip is from a performance given at Main Line UU in Philadelphia. The link will take you to the beginning of the song, but you are welcome and encouraged to view the whole thing.
