In the Fall, 5th and 6th Graders will partake in the UU Values Challenge: An exciting, interactive adventure where middle-graders explore core Unitarian Universalist values and put them into action through fun team challenges, reflection, and community activities.

The curriculum centers around one big question: "How do our Unitarian Universalist values challenge us—and what tools do they call and guide us to create as we take on life's challenges?" Using a compass as a visual metaphor to help guide our journey, children navigate eight unique, active sessions. The first two sessions focus on Love as the core of our faith, followed by six sessions exploring each individual UU value. Grounded in proven experiential and flow-learning models, each class integrates physical challenges, group reflection, social skill building, and a shared snack time to foster deep connection, trust, and community.

In the Spring they will begin The Beginnings program. The class guides youth through the history, core values, symbols, and trailblazers of Unitarian Universalism. Students engage in dynamic storytelling and hands-on activities—such as crafting UU prayer beads and learning the history behind the flaming chalice symbol—to spark curiosity and build pride in their religious heritage.

Throughout the course, children explore the contributions of historic visionaries like Sophia Lyon Fahs and Theodore Parker, as well as key historical milestones like the 1557 Edict of Torda. The program bridges historical foundations with modern action, teaching youth to apply UU principles in their daily lives by examining civil rights figures like Dr. Errold D. Collymore and modern initiatives like the 8th Principle. Taught by trained, background-checked volunteer guides in the 2nd floor classrooms, Beginnings offers a safe, welcoming environment for young people to explore their identity and values, though online registration is required to attend.
